Designed by Brunelleschi and built between 1557 and 1566, Luca Pitti, a wealthy merchant wanted to build the most excquisite palace in Florence outdoing those of the ruling Medici's. He eventually went into financial ruin and it was purchased by the Medici's who added the two wings in the rear that you see here.
